In January of 2004 the Housing 1000 Collaborative in conjunction with the Affordable Housing Coalition set a goal of constructing 1000 new housing units across all income levels in the City of Duluth by 2010. After a slow start with a large number of demolitions that initially lead negative growth in housing construction, 2006 showed significant gains toward reaching our goal. To date there has been a net gain of 613 units of those 240 are affordable. Affordability is based on the median income of a family of four in Duluth.
2006 Housing 1000 Report Released 2006 was a banner year for housing development throughout Duluth. Several large projects both public and private completed in 2006 put us back on pace to reach the 2010 goal. Additionally, residential construction permits issued in 2006 show the potential for as many as 500 additional units to be completed over the next few years. If all these projects are completed and maintained as residential we will likely reach the 1000 unit mark by 2010. Most impressive however, is the significant number of affordable units (240) in relation to market rate units (504). Clearly the commitments made by AHC, the Housing 1000 Collaborative, the City Council and Administration, have made the difference in addressing the need for housing opportunities for families of all income levels and size.
